Your Attitude Altitude

Right now I'm in the beautiful Rocky Mountains and looking out over some of the highest mountains in the US. The views inspire me to think about my attitude when I'm here. Regardless of what surprises have awaited me (such as the 93 emails I just dealt with), my attitude is affected in a positive way. So, how is your attitude affected by the altitude in your life?

I'm not only referring to your work life, but your personal life, as well. How effective are you in deciding your attitude and making the most to CREATE your altitude?

Just yesterday, for example, I was running a Presentation Skills program for a financial client. There was a woman in the room who said, "I dislike giving presentations. It's not what I like to do, want to do, or spend much time doing. My boss made me attend."

Obviously her attitude didn't have any altitude. In fact, it was pretty much below sea level when we started the program! She exhibited a great deal of anxiety when she presented and by the end of day two, we got her to a more comfortable place where she could confidently deliver an effective presentation. Did she enjoy giving the presentations? No, but her attitude was better because she saw immediate progress.

So, let's take a look at your attitude and I'll offer five ideas you can use to seek better altitude, if you need to climb that mountain higher!

1. Zig Ziglar says it, "Wake up to your opportunity clock!" Every day starts with a decision to either make it a good one or not. You decide.

2. If you are stagnant, try something NEW! I don't mean get your resume up to date. I'm referring to building your mental muscle by taking a seminar, reading a book, conducting some research, or seek coaching from an expert. If the new idea doesn't work right away, keep at it. You're still learning!

3. Do a "pessimism check". Are you letting all the small irritants (of which we all have many) get in your way, such as traffic, long lines, or a flat latte grande? Get over it and have some fun with the irritation. For example, if there's traffic, listen to your favorite music and sing at the top of your lungs (as long as you don't carpool to work). In a line, take out a piece of paper and write a poem, your weekend fun list, or a love note to your honey. Got a flat latte? That means less air in your tummy! See, it's all in the way you look at it.

4. Take an R&R break. It may be in the form of an outdoor activity, having a drink with your friends one evening, splurging on a giant ice-cream cone (not that low-fat, no sugar stuff, the real thing), or taking off for the weekend to an island, a lake, or the mountains.

5. Set your goals by writing them down and sharing them with a loved one. The better you are at determining and planning your objectives, the more focused you'll be while working to achieve them.

Remember, YOU determine how high your attitude can go, depending on your ability, skill, and desire  to ascend the mountain to gain altitude. So, get an extra hit of oxygen and keep climbing!
